Flint, Mich. – August 11, 2025 — A night of celebration in Flint turned into tragedy when an 18-year-old woman was killed and a 16-year-old boy injured in a shooting during the city’s annual 810 Day festivities on Sunday.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said the incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. near East 2nd Street and Harrison Street, in the heart of downtown Flint. The area was crowded with an estimated 2,000 people who had gathered to mark 810 Day, a local tradition named after the city’s area code and intended to celebrate Flint’s community pride, culture, and resilience.
When officers arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The 18-year-old woman was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts. The 16-year-old boy was also transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Both victims are from Flint.
The MSP Major Case Unit has taken over the investigation, working alongside local authorities to determine what led to the gunfire. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and police have not released information on a possible suspect or motive. Investigators are urging witnesses to come forward, stressing that public cooperation is crucial to solving the case. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers or directly to state police.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community. Among those responding publicly was Flint native and two-time Olympic boxing gold medalist Claressa Shields, who posted on social media expressing her sadness and frustration. Shields lamented that Flint’s potential is too often overshadowed by “violence, ignorance and anger” and called for unity and sustained efforts to create change.
Community leaders say the incident is a sobering reminder of the challenges facing Flint, even during events meant to foster togetherness. 810 Day, typically a joyful occasion with music, food, and local vendors, has now been marked by grief.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, pending notification of family members.
Michigan State Police continue to canvass the area for evidence and interview witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact the MSP Major Case Unit or submit a tip anonymously.
