HUNTSVILLE, Texas — A tragic shooting in Huntsville claimed the life of 25-year-old Keaonna Major, a young mother whose death has left family, friends, and the community in mourning. The incident occurred Thursday morning at an apartment complex on Essex Boulevard, prompting a swift and extensive law enforcement response.
According to Huntsville Police, officers were called to the scene after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Major suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Marquel Wiley. Police say Wiley fled the area on foot immediately after the shooting, heading into a nearby wooded area off FM 2821. Multiple agencies, including local police, sheriff’s deputies, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, joined in the manhunt.
As a precaution, Huntsville Independent School District placed Huntsville Elementary School and Huntsville High School on lockdown. The lockdown was later downgraded to a “secure” status once it was determined that the suspect had moved away from school grounds. Officials emphasized that no students or staff were harmed during the incident.
Wiley was eventually located and taken into custody without further incident. He is now facing a capital murder charge and is being held in the Walker County Jail. Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive, but they confirmed that the shooting was not a random act and that Wiley and Major were acquainted.
Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with multiple police units, K-9 teams, and helicopters combing the area during the search. “It was scary. We didn’t know if he was still out here or where he might be,” said one resident who witnessed part of the police response.
The community has begun rallying in support of Major’s family, with friends describing her as a devoted mother who worked hard to provide for her child. Social media posts have been filled with condolences, prayers, and calls for justice.
Huntsville Police say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to piece together the events leading to the shooting. Court records show Wiley will make his first appearance before a judge in the coming days.
