Tragedy struck the streets of Birkirkara early Sunday morning when 42-year-old Khim Bahadur Pun, a Nepalese food courier and father of two young children, was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Pun, who had been living in Malta for over three years, was riding his Kymco motorbike on Triq Salvu Psaila when he was struck by a Maserati Levante.
According to Maltese police, the Maserati collided with Pun’s motorbike before crashing into three parked cars. The occupants of the Maserati fled the scene on foot, but a 17-year-old boy suspected of driving the vehicle, along with two other passengers, were later arrested.
This heartbreaking incident marks Pun as the 18th person to die on Malta’s roads so far this year. The loss has deeply affected the community, especially the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), which expressed shock and sorrow in a Facebook post. The NRNA president, Rems Khanal, confirmed that the organization is coordinating a fundraiser to assist with repatriating Pun’s body to Nepal to allow his family to mourn properly.
Pun’s death is the second fatality involving a Nepalese food delivery driver in Malta in recent years, highlighting the dangers faced by delivery workers on the island’s busy roads. This incident adds to a grim month of July, which saw six road fatalities and was marked as the deadliest week on Maltese roads in at least 25 years—from July 23 to July 29.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as the community mourns the loss of a hardworking man who was supporting his family far from home. Lovin Malta extends its deepest condolences to Khim Bahadur Pun’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
