On August 4, 2025, just before 3:30 p.m., deputies from the sheriff’s office responded to a distress call at a residence on Grand View Crossing in Summerville, South Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 38-year-old Angel Capers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save her, Capers was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a devastating end to a harrowing struggle for safety.
In the weeks leading up to her death, Angel Capers repeatedly reached out to law enforcement and the courts, voicing her fear for her life and the safety of her children. She reported ongoing threats and violent behavior from her former partner, 40-year-old Jeremy Hewlett, who had repeatedly violated a protective order she had obtained against him.
Capers and Hewlett, once spouses, had been living together at the same home on Grand View Crossing, despite the escalating tension and threats. According to a motion for an emergency hearing filed by Capers on June 27 in Berkeley County family court, Hewlett’s behavior had become increasingly alarming, including inappropriate actions toward a teenage family member and episodes of aggression.
The protective order granted to Capers on July 2 was meant to keep Hewlett away, forbidding him from threatening, abusing, or contacting her and her children. However, Hewlett repeatedly ignored this legal safeguard, showing up uninvited at her workplace and home, even involving his family members in attempts to contact Capers despite clear prohibitions.
In the days leading to the fatal shooting, Hewlett’s harassment intensified. On August 4, he reportedly blocked Capers’ vehicle in a parking lot and damaged her car in an attempt to break the windows. Later that day, Hewlett broke the glass of the rear door of Capers’ home, then proceeded upstairs where he allegedly shot Capers multiple times. Surveillance footage captured Hewlett fleeing the scene immediately after the attack.
Jeremy Hewlett was swiftly arrested and charged with murder, stalking, criminal solicitation of a minor, malicious injury to personal property, and multiple violations of the protective order. At the time of the shooting, active warrants were out for his arrest. Following a bond hearing on August 5, Hewlett remained in jail, as bail cannot be set for murder charges.
Sheriff Duane Lewis emphasized the tragic nature of the case, stating, “This horrific incident is a sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for protection and intervention.”
Angel Capers’ death underscores the dangers many face in abusive relationships, even when legal protections are in place. Her family, friends, and the community mourn her loss and continue to advocate for stronger measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
