FREEPORT, IL — The community of Freeport is mourning the loss of 62-year-old Darcy Brunner, a devoted wife, mother, and respected local, who tragically died in a vehicle accident on Saturday evening.

The crash occurred on Illinois Route 26, between Oneco Road and Winslow Road, when Brunner’s vehicle collided with another, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency responders arrived to find Brunner suffering from fatal injuries; she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Freeport Coroner’s Office was subsequently called to assist with identification and investigation. The roadway was temporarily closed but has since reopened.

Darcy Brunner, a native of Delhi, Iowa, was a proud alumna of Maquoketa Valley Senior High School and held a master’s degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Married to Thomas Brunner, she was cherished throughout the community for her warmth, intelligence, and zeal for life.

Shortly before the fatal accident, Darcy had been among friends attending a Jonas Brothers listening party—one of her many passions reflecting her love for music and joyful moments.

Friends and neighbors recall Darcy as a loving, enthusiastic presence who brought genuine kindness to everyone she met. Her commitment to family, education, and her community made her a pillar in Freeport, and her sudden passing leaves a profound void.
