Unidentified Victim Recovered from Lake Anna Near Route 652 Bridge in Drowning Incident

LOUISA COUNTY, VA — The Louisa County Department of Fire/EMS and the Sheriff’s Office are handling a recovery operation after a drowning incident at Lake Anna on Saturday morning. The search began shortly before 9 a.m. near the Route 652 bridge over Elk Creek, where a distressed individual was reported in the water.

First responders—including boat teams and rescue divers—were dispatched to the area and conducted an extensive search. Hours later, the body of an as-yet-unidentified person was pulled from the lake. Authorities have not released any information on the individual’s identity or condition and confirmed no foul play is suspected at this time.

To assist in the operation, help came from Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management, demonstrating strong mutual-aid cooperation between neighboring jurisdictions. The Louisa County Department of Fire/EMS thanked all agencies and volunteers for their rapid, coordinated response in challenging conditions.

Efforts are now focused on both identifying the victim and determining the precise circumstances that led to the drowning. Investigators are reviewing any available surveillance and gathering details from potential witnesses in the area.

Lake Anna has been the site of multiple drowning incidents in recent years, including a tragic Memorial Day weekend case where a 42-year-old father and his 14-year-old son drowned in the lake while the father attempted a rescue. These recurrent emergencies underscore ongoing concerns about lake safety and the importance of water precautions.

Residents and visitors are reminded to exercise caution near the lake, especially in unguarded areas like the Route 652 bridge. Safety experts recommend wearing personal flotation devices, swimming near supervised zones, and avoiding isolated or fast-moving water. Backup support teams should be on alert during peak lake usage days.

As the community awaits further updates, the Louisa County officials extend their deepest condolences to whoever has suffered this loss. Additional information will be shared as soon as the identity of the victim is confirmed and the investigation progresses.
