London Powers Obituary, North Carolina Central University Mourns the Loss of Promising Student London Powers

North Carolina Central University is grieving the tragic loss of London Powers, a bright and compassionate junior majoring in social work, who passed away on Monday, August 11, 2025, from injuries sustained in a double shooting in Durham. London’s death has left her classmates, professors, and the wider university community heartbroken, mourning a life full of promise cut short far too soon.

A proud native of Washington, D.C., London was deeply committed to her education and was an esteemed member of the University Honors Program. Known for her intellect, dedication, and empathy, she had ambitious plans to pursue a Master of Social Work degree after graduation, focusing on adolescent and mental health. Her passion for helping vulnerable populations was not only academic—it was personal, driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

London’s presence on campus was both active and influential. She had recently been elected as the event coordinator for the NCCU Social Work Society for the 2025–26 academic year, a leadership role that allowed her to foster connection, advocacy, and support among her peers. She was also preparing to begin an internship at the Durham Center for Senior Life, furthering her dedication to community service and outreach.

Friends, classmates, and professors describe London as vibrant, hardworking, and endlessly supportive—a student who not only excelled in her coursework but also lifted up those around her. Her contributions to the social work program, both in and outside the classroom, left a lasting impact on her peers and mentors alike.

In the wake of this tragedy, NCCU is reminding students, faculty, and staff of the importance of seeking support. Counseling services are available by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, second floor, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with drop-in hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. After-hours crisis assistance is also available through the same number. Faculty and staff may access confidential support through ComPsych, as detailed on the university’s HR page.

Funeral arrangements will be shared once available. The NCCU community joins together in keeping London’s family, friends, and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers, honoring her life, her work, and the difference she was determined to make in the world.
