Nick West Obituary, Natchitoches Mourns the Sudden Loss of Beloved Coach and Mentor Nick West


NATCHITOCHES, La. — The community of Natchitoches is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Nick West, a cherished former coach at Parkview Baptist School, who passed away unexpectedly. Known for his unwavering dedication to his students, love for athletics, and commitment to shaping young lives, Nick’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of family, friends, colleagues, and countless athletes he mentored.

Nick’s career as a coach was defined not only by his knowledge of the game but also by his ability to instill discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic in his players. He believed that sports were more than just competition—they were a means to build character, teamwork, and resilience. Former players recall his encouraging words, patient guidance, and the way he pushed them to be their best both on and off the field.

Beyond his contributions to athletics, Nick was a beacon of positivity in his community. Friends describe him as someone who could brighten a room with his smile and make everyone feel welcomed and valued. His genuine kindness, coupled with a passion for helping others succeed, left an imprint on everyone he met.

Nick’s deep family roots in Louisiana shaped his values and work ethic. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Billy West, Sr. and Paula Haynes West of Natchitoches, and Matthus and Virginia Gremillion West of Ville Platte. He is survived by his loving parents, Billy L. West, Jr. of Natchitoches, Shelley Coe West of Ville Platte, and Augustine Williams Nabors of Natchitoches. Also cherishing his memory are his aunt and uncle, Cyndi and Terry Downs of Natchitoches, along with cousins Jennifer Martin (Kevin) of Oswego, NY, William Downs (Meredith) of Biloxi, MS, and Andrew Downs (Melissa) of Kerrville, TX.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home, 848 Keyser Ave., Natchitoches, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, followed by burial at Memory Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home.

Nick West’s legacy of mentorship, compassion, and community service will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him. In the words of many of his former players, “Coach West didn’t just teach us the game—he taught us how to live.”
