Italian Athlete Mattia Debertolis Dies at 29 After Collapse During World Games Event in China August 13, 2025


The sporting world is mourning the sudden death of Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis, who passed away at the age of 29 after collapsing during a competition at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China.

According to event organizers, Debertolis was competing in the men’s middle-distance orienteering race on August 8 when he suddenly collapsed on the course. Medical teams rushed to the scene and administered emergency treatment before transporting him to a locale hospital.

Despite four days of intensive care, his condition worsened, and he was pronounced dead on August 12. The International Orienteering Federation confirmed his passing in a public statement, describing him as “a dedicated athlete, a beloved teammate, and a shining example of sportsmanship.”

Debertolis was a rising star in the Italian orienteering community, known for his endurance, precision, and competitive spirit. He had represented Italy in multiple international competitions, earning a reputation as a fierce but fair competitor.

Born in Trento, Italy, Debertolis began orienteering as a teenager and quickly rose through the national rankings. His dedication to the sport earned him spots in the Italian national team, where he participated in European and World Championships.

The circumstances surrounding his collapse remain under investigation, with organizers awaiting a full medical report. Early indications suggest a possible cardiac-related event, though no official cause of death has been released.
