SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the sudden loss of Capt. Steve Henderson, a nearly 20-year veteran of the department, who was killed in a vehicle collision Thursday evening.

According to officials, the crash occurred in Oconee County. Deputies from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the collision. The Oconee County Coroner’s Office has confirmed Henderson’s death and is assisting with the case. As of Friday, authorities have not released additional details about the cause of the crash or whether other vehicles were involved.

Capt. Henderson’s career with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office began in 2005, where he served in multiple divisions, including Uniform Patrol, Narcotics, and as a longtime K-9 handler. He later advanced to lead the K-9 Unit as lieutenant, before earning a promotion in January 2024 to captain of uniform patrol—succeeding Capt. Gregg Satterfield.

Colleagues describe Henderson as a dedicated leader who combined tactical expertise with a genuine concern for the well-being of his fellow officers and the community. “He was a captain in a vital place,” one fellow law enforcement officer said, underscoring his importance to daily operations and public safety in Spartanburg County.

Sheriff Chuck Wright and the entire Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office have expressed deep sorrow over Henderson’s passing, extending condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers. “This is a tremendous loss for our agency and for those who had the privilege to serve alongside him,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Friends and community members have begun sharing tributes, remembering Henderson for his professionalism, sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to service. Many noted that beyond his badge, he was a devoted family man and a mentor to younger deputies.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Capt. Steve Henderson’s legacy will be remembered not only through his years of distinguished service but also through the impact he made on those he led, served, and protected.
