COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Saturday, Aug. 9, in northeast Colorado Springs as 20-year-old Spencer Lehmkuhl.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers were dispatched just after 6 p.m. to the intersection of North Union Boulevard and Garmish Road, near Vickers Drive, following reports of a serious collision. Investigators determined that a motorcycle ridden by Lehmkuhl collided with an SUV.
First responders arrived quickly but tragically pronounced Lehmkuhl dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained on-site and cooperated fully with police. At this time, CSPD has not reported any additional injuries.
The department’s Major Crash Team was called to the scene to conduct a detailed investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that speed was a contributing factor in the collision, though officials have not yet released a final conclusion regarding liability. The crash prompted temporary road closures in the area as officers worked to collect evidence and reconstruct the events leading to the deadly impact.
On Monday, Aug. 11, the coroner’s office performed an autopsy and confirmed Lehmkuhl’s identity. News of his passing has shaken the community, leaving family, friends, and peers mourning the sudden and devastating loss of a young life with a promising future ahead.
This crash marks the 35th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2025. By comparison, at this same point in 2024, the city had recorded 37 traffic deaths, underscoring the persistent challenges officials face in addressing roadway safety despite ongoing enforcement and awareness campaigns.
Authorities continue to urge drivers and motorcyclists alike to exercise caution, particularly when traveling along busy corridors such as Union Boulevard. Speed, distracted driving, and failure to yield remain among the most common factors in serious and fatal collisions.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has additional information to contact the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crash Team.
For those who knew Spencer Lehmkuhl, his untimely passing is being remembered not only as a tragic statistic in the city’s growing tally of roadway deaths but as the loss of a vibrant young man whose life was cut short far too soon.
