BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham community is reeling after the tragic death of a beloved high school football coach who was fatally shot earlier this week. Authorities have confirmed that 39-year-old Demetrice Darnell “Coach” Beverly, an assistant football coach at Parker High School, was killed in a shooting at an apartment complex off Lakeshore Parkway on Wednesday, August 13.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers responded to the Lakeshore Ridge Apartments just before 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they discovered Beverly suffering from a gunshot wound inside one of the units. Despite efforts from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Beverly had been inside the apartment with a 21-year-old woman when 23-year-old De’Corlion Keshaun Robinson, identified as the woman’s boyfriend, entered the bedroom and opened fire. Robinson fled briefly but was apprehended moments later outside the complex. The woman was not physically harmed.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has since charged Robinson with murder and unlawful possession of a machine gun conversion device. He is being held without bond on the murder charge and faces a $15,000 bond on the weapons violation.
A Respected Mentor and Community Leader
The death of Coach Beverly has sent shockwaves through the Parker High School community, where he was widely admired as both a mentor and role model. Known for his passion for the game and dedication to his students, Beverly played a pivotal role in helping Parker High achieve its first-ever state championship.
Head Coach Frank Warren described the loss as devastating:
“One day you’re at practice, the next you’re gone. Coach Beverly gave so much to these young men and to our community. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched.”
Students, parents, and fellow coaches echoed similar sentiments, remembering him as a father figure who was committed to uplifting young athletes both on and off the field.
Investigation Ongoing
Police say the investigation remains active, though Robinson is expected to face arraignment in the coming days. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Birmingham Police Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
Meanwhile, Parker High School is planning a community vigil on Monday evening to honor Beverly’s life and service.
