HAMPSHIRE, Ill. — The quiet community of Hampshire is reeling after authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Deegan Kirschke, a high school student and former wrestler, was fatally shot late Saturday night inside a home on High Street.

According to the Hampshire Police Department, officers responded to the 100 block of High Street around 11:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they discovered Kirschke suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders from the Hampshire Fire Protection District attempted to render aid, but the teenager was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Ongoing Investigation

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, along with the Pingree Grove Police Department, Gilberts Police Department, and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, have joined Hampshire police in the investigation.

Officials confirmed that the shooting was an isolated incident and stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the community. They also stated that Kirschke’s death was not a suicide, but declined to provide further details, citing the sensitivity of the active investigation.
