Dandenong Fatal Stabbing: Police Launch Homicide Probe After Man Killed Near Petrol Station in Melbourne’s Southeast

A major homicide investigation is underway after a man was fatally stabbed in Dandenong, a suburb in Melbourne’s southeast, early Tuesday morning.

According to Victoria Police, emergency services were called to Potter Street shortly before 5 a.m. following reports of a violent assault near a petrol station. When officers and paramedics arrived, they discovered a man suffering from life-threatening stab wounds. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene around 4:50 a.m.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the victim’s identity, and details surrounding the events leading to the fatal attack remain unclear. Detectives from the Homicide Squad are now piecing together the circumstances, speaking with potential witnesses and reviewing nearby CCTV footage in an effort to establish a timeline of events.

The area was cordoned off for much of the morning, with forensic officers meticulously combing the scene for evidence. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid Potter Street and its surrounds as police conducted their investigation. The crime scene caused significant disruption in the area until it was reopened later in the day.

In a statement, police emphasized that all possibilities are being explored. “Investigators are keeping an open mind as to what led to this incident,” authorities said, underscoring that no arrests have yet been made.

The stabbing has shocked the local community, raising concerns about public safety in a suburb that has seen a number of violent incidents in recent years. Community leaders are urging residents to remain vigilant and to assist police with any information that could shed light on the case.

Victoria Police have appealed directly to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have been in the area at the time, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage from Potter Street or surrounding roads between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., is urged to come forward. Reports can be made to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online via a confidential submission.

The homicide investigation is ongoing, and further details, including the identity of the victim, are expected to be released once formal identification has been completed and next of kin are notified.
