17-Year-Old Teen Tragically Drowns at Hampton Beach Amid Strong Currents


HAMPTON BEACH, N.H. — A 17-year-old boy tragically lost his life Sunday evening after being pulled away from shore by a strong ocean current at Hampton Beach. The incident occurred at approximately 6:46 p.m. on August 24, 2025, prompting an immediate response from New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol and local emergency services.

According to witness accounts, the teenager had been swimming with family members when he was caught by the powerful current. His father bravely entered the water in an attempt to rescue him but also became distressed, necessitating emergency assistance.

Although the State Beach Patrol lifeguards were off duty at the time, they were quickly called back to the scene. Lifeguards, along with police and fire personnel, entered the water and were able to bring both the teen and his father safely to shore. Lifesaving measures were immediately administered to the teenager before he was transported to Exeter Hospital. Tragically, despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, the teen was pronounced deceased. His father was also treated at the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The victim’s name is being withheld due to his age. The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol is leading the investigation into the incident, with assistance from Hampton Beach lifeguards, the Hampton Police and Fire Departments, and North Hampton Fire & Rescue. Authorities are working to gather further details and ensure that safety protocols are reviewed.

The tragic event prompted the temporary closure of Hampton Beach Sunday evening. Officials plan to assess conditions in the morning before reopening the area to the public. Residents and visitors are reminded to exercise caution in the water and be mindful of currents, even in areas considered safe for swimming.
