Nsanje, Malawi – The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its employees, 31-year-old Joseph Chilowa, who died on Monday while carrying out maintenance work in Nsanje District.
In a statement shared through its official Facebook page, ESCOM described the incident as heartbreaking and assured the public that a full investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Chilowa’s death.
“We are cooperating fully with the authorities, including the Malawi Police Service, as they conduct their own enquiries. Our investigation will seek to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” the utility company said.
The incident occurred at the Mbenje CR-20 camp site, where Chilowa had been working on a power pole as part of routine duties. According to Nsanje Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Jabulani Ng’oma, Chilowa fell from the pole and sustained fatal injuries. Despite efforts from colleagues and responders at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
News of his passing has left not only his family and colleagues but also the broader community in shock. Chilowa was described as a hardworking young man who dedicated himself to improving electricity access and reliability in Malawi, a country where power infrastructure plays a vital role in both economic and social development.
Residents in Nsanje expressed deep sorrow, with some community members saying the tragedy underscores the risks frontline utility workers face daily to ensure that Malawians have access to electricity.
Safety experts and industry observers have noted that electrical line work is among the most dangerous professions, with risks including falls, electrocution, and equipment failure. ESCOM’s decision to investigate signals its commitment not only to transparency but also to preventing similar accidents in the future by possibly strengthening safety protocols and training.
Colleagues and friends of Chilowa remembered him as dedicated and passionate about his work. Many took to social media to offer condolences, with one post describing him as “a brave young man who gave his all in service to the nation.”
This tragic loss highlights the sacrifices made by utility workers who often operate in challenging environments to keep essential services running.
Authorities have not released details regarding funeral arrangements, but community members in Nsanje and fellow ESCOM employees are expected to gather in solidarity with the family.
The Malawi Police Service has confirmed that their inquiries are ongoing, and ESCOM has pledged to release additional information once both investigations are complete.
