Thomas Goodson Obituary – Stafford, TX: Two Dead, Including Suspect Adrian Mercado, After SWAT Standoff; Officer Survives Gunfire

A tense overnight standoff in Stafford, Texas, ended in tragedy with two people dead, including the suspected gunman, after a prolonged exchange of gunfire and a massive law enforcement response. The incident has left the community shaken as investigators continue to piece together the violent events that unfolded.

The Start of a Deadly Night

According to the Stafford Police Department, the ordeal began around 10 p.m. Wednesday evening when a man walked into the police station and informed officers that his son, 35-year-old Adrian Mercado, had killed someone at a residence on Lawrence Lane near Stafford Road. He warned police that Mercado was heavily armed and dangerous.

Responding officers rushed to the scene, where they made a chilling discovery in the backyard of the home. The body of 32-year-old Thomas Goodson was found wrapped in a blanket and hidden under plywood, suggesting an attempt to conceal the crime.

Gunfire and a Heroic Officer’s Close Call

As Stafford police, alongside a Missouri City K-9 Unit, attempted to enter the residence through the front door, Mercado immediately opened fire. In the exchange, one Stafford officer was struck, but miraculously, the bullet was deflected by his radio.

The officer, who has served the department for two years, refused to abandon the scene despite the close call.
“He actually stayed on scene for a while; he did not want to leave,” said Stafford Police Lt. Luciano Lopez. “He wanted to see it through to the end. He wasn’t injured, so I commend him for trying to see the job through.”

Gunfire continued intermittently for more than an hour and a half, forcing officers to take cover as bullets reportedly whizzed overhead. With the situation escalating, a multi-agency SWAT team was deployed, and the standoff stretched into the early morning hours.

Standoff Ends in Tragedy

When law enforcement finally breached the home, they discovered Mercado dead from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that Mercado had a lengthy criminal history and was already wanted on an aggravated robbery warrant at the time of the incident.

Police are still working to determine the exact relationship between Mercado and Goodson, as well as the motive that led to the violent encounter.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The shocking sequence of events has left Stafford residents unsettled, particularly given the scale of the police response and the danger posed to officers and neighbors in the area. While the quick response of law enforcement likely prevented further loss of life, the deaths of both Goodson and Mercado have brought grief and questions to a community unaccustomed to such violence.

Thomas Goodson is being remembered by friends and family as a young man whose life was cut short in an act of senseless violence. Meanwhile, the police department has praised the bravery of the officer whose equipment spared him from serious injury, calling his decision to remain on scene a testament to his dedication.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to uncover more details about the events that led to the deadly standoff and the circumstances surrounding Goodson’s death.
