Jeremiah James of Shelbyville and Madison Greenwell of Mt. Juliet, TN Car Accident, Cause of Death: Kentucky Murder Suspects Captured in Tennessee After Interstate Pursuit

Authorities in Tennessee have announced the arrest of two Kentucky murder suspects following a dramatic car chase along Interstate 40 West that ended in Wilson County on Sunday, September 7, 2025. The suspects, identified as Jeremiah James, 23, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, and Madison Greenwell, 21, of Shelbyville, were wanted in connection with a murder investigation in Shelby County, Kentucky, stemming from an incident in August.

Chase Triggered by Stolen Vehicle Alert

The pursuit began when the Lebanon Police Department was alerted through its license plate reader system to a vehicle reported stolen in an armed carjacking that occurred in Louisville, Kentucky, just two days earlier. When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to comply, initiating a high-speed chase down I-40 West.

The pursuit came to a halt in Mt. Juliet, where the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. This prompted an intensive search by law enforcement officers, who quickly canvassed nearby residential areas. Witnesses reported seeing the suspects running through yards and behind homes. With the help of these tips, officers were able to track down and apprehend both individuals a short time later.

Murder Suspects Identified

Investigators confirmed that the suspects taken into custody were Jeremiah James, who was driving the stolen vehicle, and Madison Greenwell, who was a passenger. Both individuals have been named as suspects in a murder case currently under investigation in Shelby County, Kentucky.

The stolen vehicle, which had been used during the armed carjacking, has since been recovered by police.

Coordinated Effort Praised

Officials from multiple agencies, including Lebanon Police, Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, and Mt. Juliet Police Department, collaborated in the pursuit and capture. Authorities praised the quick communication and teamwork that prevented the suspects from escaping.

“This was a dangerous situation that could have ended very differently,” one official said. “Thanks to the swift response of officers and the cooperation of local residents, two dangerous individuals are now in custody.”

Next Steps

James and Greenwell are expected to face charges in Tennessee related to the carjacking, vehicle theft, and evading arrest, before being extradited back to Kentucky to face murder charges. Shelby County authorities are working closely with Tennessee law enforcement to coordinate their return.

Community Response

The arrests have brought relief to both Kentucky and Tennessee communities, where residents had been on edge since the suspects were first identified. The case highlights the growing importance of technology like license plate recognition systems in helping police track and apprehend suspects quickly across state lines.

As the legal process unfolds, families affected by the Shelby County murder continue to seek justice. For now, authorities emphasize that with the suspects in custody, the immediate threat to the public has been removed.
