A North Carolina community is in deep mourning after a devastating act of violence claimed the lives of a well-respected pastor, his wife, and his elderly mother. Authorities say the tragedy was carried out by their 15-year-old nephew, leaving family, friends, and neighbors reeling.
The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Pastor Danny Richards, 57, his wife Sabrina Richards, 54, and his mother Clara Richards, 74, were fatally shot inside their home on Kentucky Derby Drive in the Trotter’s Ridge neighborhood near Anderson Creek.
According to investigators, the teen suspect—who had been living with the family—opened fire inside the residence. A courageous 10-year-old cousin dialed 911, reporting that several family members had been shot. Thankfully, the child was not harmed.
Deputies arrived to find Danny and Sabrina Richards deceased at the scene. Clara Richards was rushed to Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The suspect fled in a vehicle but was apprehended hours later after abandoning the car in nearby woods. He now faces three counts of first-degree murder, along with charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Due to his age, authorities have not released his name.
A Legacy of Service and Faith
Pastor Richards was the founder of Genesis Grace Ministry in Fayetteville, a church known for its strong outreach efforts, particularly in serving the homeless and marginalized. Those who worked alongside him say he lived out his faith with humility, always seeking to serve rather than be recognized.
“He never wanted the spotlight—he wanted to do the work,” said Debbie Brown, chairperson of the Cumberland County Continuum of Care on Homelessness, where Richards was an active member. “He made an impact in every corner of this community. Their absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled.”
Both Danny and Sabrina Richards were also U.S. Army veterans, having served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their combined military and ministry service reflected lives of sacrifice, dedication, and compassion for others.
Remembering Clara Richards
Clara Richards, remembered as a devoted mother and prayerful woman, was equally beloved in her community. Her passing deepens the grief felt by those who admired not only her faith but her kindness and wisdom.
Community in Mourning
The tragic news has left the Fayetteville faith community stunned and heartbroken. Neighbors recalled how the couple opened their home to their nephew out of love and care, only to face an unimaginable end. The church and local organizations that benefited from the Richards’ service are now grappling with an overwhelming loss.
A Call for Prayer and Healing
As authorities continue to investigate, many across the region are calling for prayer—for the Richards family, their church, and the wider community shaken by this tragedy.
“In this time of grief, I invite everyone to hold the family, friends, and all affected by this loss in your prayers,” Brown said.
For those who knew Danny, Sabrina, and Clara Richards, their lives will be remembered as a testimony of faith, service, and love. While the community struggles to come to terms with this heartbreaking loss, many find comfort in the hope Pastor Richards so often shared—a hope that endures even in the face of sorrow.
