Lakeside, California — The El Capitan High School community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of one of its brightest young lights. Obed Lopez, a student-athlete remembered for his infectious spirit, big heart, and dedication on and off the basketball court, passed away unexpectedly on August 2, 2025.

Obed was a beloved son, teammate, classmate, and friend whose life, though far too short, left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His sudden passing has shocked not only his family but also the broader Lakeside community, where he was well known and deeply cherished.

Coach Teresa Hodges, head coach at El Capitan High School, shared a touching tribute to Obed, reflecting on her experience coaching and mentoring him since his sophomore year.

“Hi, my name is Coach Teresa. I’ve had the privilege of coaching and mentoring Obed Lopez since his sophomore year of high school, both on and off the court. It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of his passing. We are all so heartbroken.”

Coach Teresa went on to describe Obed as a rare kind of young man whose warmth and spirit stood out. “As his head coach, I witnessed firsthand the kindness, discipline, and joy Obed brought to every practice and game.

Whether we won or lost, his energy never changed—he always gave it his all. His teammates looked up to him not just because of his skills, but because of the way he treated people—with respect, with humility, and with so much heart.”

Obed’s loss has triggered an outpouring of grief and love from classmates, teachers, coaches, and friends. Social media has been filled with tributes highlighting his sense of humor, his loyalty, and his ability to brighten any room he walked into.

Many recall Obed’s smile and his genuine care for those around him. Whether it was helping a struggling teammate, encouraging a friend through tough times, or cracking a joke to ease the tension of a tough game, Obed had a gift for lifting others up.

He was also a dedicated student who balanced athletics with academics and always made time for his family. He had plans and dreams for the future—dreams that were grounded in his love for community, family, and sports. Friends say he had talked about continuing to play basketball in college and maybe becoming a coach himself one day.

In the wake of this tragic and unexpected loss, Coach Teresa—with the full support of Obed’s family—has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of his funeral and memorial.

“Unplanned loss brings unexpected hardship,” she said. “And while nothing can ease the pain his family is experiencing, we want to ensure they’re supported during this devastating time.”

Obed Lopez is survived by his loving family, who describe him as a son who always made them proud and filled their home with laughter. They are deeply grateful for the messages of support, prayers, and kindness shown in recent days.

The El Capitan High School gym, where Obed spent so many hours honing his craft and forming lifelong bonds, will be the site of a candlelight vigil in the coming days. The event will be open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to wear school colors in Obed’s honor.

As Lakeside mourns this tremendous loss, the memory of Obed Lopez will live on—in every court where a game is played with heart, in every student who chooses kindness, and in every teammate who leads by example. Rest in peace, Obed. You will never be forgotten.
