CANTON, Mich. — A 13-year-old girl was fatally shot inside her family’s apartment Tuesday afternoon in a tragic incident that has shaken the Canton community.
The victim, identified as Aymira Thomas, was pronounced dead at the scene after police and emergency personnel responded to reports of a shooting around 12:24 p.m. at the Ridgeline at Canton apartment complex, near Joy Road and Honeytree Boulevard.
Authorities say first responders arrived within minutes and attempted lifesaving measures, but the young girl succumbed to her injuries.
According to Canton police, Aymira’s 21-year-old brother was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being considered a person of interest in the ongoing investigation. Preliminary evidence indicates he may have been in possession of the firearm that discharged the fatal shot. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting was accidental.
In a statement to the media, Deputy Police Chief Joseph Bialy expressed sorrow over the incident and concern regarding firearm safety.
“This is a devastating loss, regardless of the circumstances,” Bialy said. “Our hearts go out to the family as we work to determine exactly what happened. This incident is also a painful reminder of the importance of securing firearms, especially in homes with children.”
The scene at the Ridgeline complex remained active for several hours Tuesday afternoon as investigators processed evidence and interviewed witnesses. Dozens of family members gathered outside the building, many visibly distraught as they awaited updates.
Additional officers were deployed to secure the area, though police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Separately, a police vehicle responding to the initial emergency call was involved in a traffic collision at Cherry Hill and Lilley Roads. Authorities reported minor injuries resulting from the crash.
As of Wednesday, police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the investigation remains open and active.
The Canton Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
“As a community, we mourn the tragic loss of a young life,” the department said in a written statement. “We remain committed to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation and will continue to provide updates as they become available.”
