With heavy hearts, the Georgia Southern University community and the greater world of collegiate athletics mourn the loss of Nicholas “Nick” Scull, who passed away on the morning of July 29, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Nick was a beloved Associate Athletics Director at Georgia Southern and a devoted husband, father, colleague, and friend. He was 43 years old. Nick is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Scull, and their two beautiful daughters, Eliza and Izzy, who were the center of his universe.

His passing leaves a deep void in their lives and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Born and raised in Georgia, Nick dedicated his professional life to sports and service, ultimately becoming an integral part of the Georgia Southern athletics department.

His leadership, humility, and deep knowledge of sports operations made him a respected figure not only within his department but across the university and the Sun Belt Conference. Colleagues, student-athletes, and staff all describe Nick as a man of unshakable integrity, compassion, and quiet strength

“Rode this afternoon with a heavy heart after learning that Nick Scull lost his battle with cancer this morning. Nick was our operations guy at Georgia Southern and was one of the nicest people you could ever work with. After the consolidation, he treated me like I had been working at GS for decades and always enjoyed talking sports with him before, during and after our numerous on-campus events. Heartbroken for his wife Melissa and his two young daughters, Eliza and Izzy.”

 

Nick’s warmth and professionalism were constant. Whether he was coordinating a major campus athletic event, working behind the scenes to make game day run smoothly, or mentoring young professionals, he did so with humility and heart.

was known for building others up, for taking the time to listen, and for treating every person—no matter their title or position—with genuine respect. Many in the Eagle community have expressed their grief and gratitude for the life Nick lived.

His daughters, Eliza and Izzy, brought him endless joy, and he took immense pride in being their dad—attending their games, cheering them on, and creating memories full of laughter and love.

Nick faced his cancer diagnosis with the same grace and quiet strength he was known for in all aspects of life. He remained a steady presence for his family and continued to uplift others even as he faced the most difficult fight of his life.
