Tragic Inverness Crash Claims Life of Citrus High 16-year-old Teen Jaedrien Story; Dylan Austin Richards Arrested After Fleeing Scene

The tight-knit community of Inverness, Florida, is mourning the devastating loss of 16-year-old Jaedrien Story, a cherished student at Citrus High School, who was killed in a fiery car crash earlier this week. The tragic accident has left a deep scar on the hearts of residents throughout Citrus County, prompting an outpouring of sorrow, support, and calls for justice.

Crash Details and Arrest

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal collision took place Monday afternoon as five teens from Inverness were traveling southbound on I-75 in Sumter County in a Dodge Charger. The vehicle, reportedly driven by 17-year-old Dylan Austin Richards, was moving at an excessive speed as Richards attempted to pass slower-moving traffic. In an effort to avoid a collision, he veered onto the shoulder, lost control of the car, and crashed violently into a tree. The vehicle burst into flames on impact.

All five teenage occupants sustained injuries in the wreck and were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Despite emergency efforts, Jaedrien Story, just 16, tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Adding to the heartbreak and outrage, troopers reported that Richards fled the scene immediately after the crash. After allegedly removing the license plate from the vehicle, he escaped on foot. Law enforcement launched an intensive search and eventually found Richards hiding inside a chicken coop on NW 111th Lane. He was arrested without incident.

Richards now faces serious felony charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances of the crash and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

Remembering Jaedrien Story

Jaedrien’s death has left a gaping hole in the lives of those who knew him. Friends and classmates describe him as kind, full of life, and someone who always knew how to lift the spirits of those around him. His vibrant personality and genuine care for others made him a beloved presence at Citrus High School and beyond.

“He was the type of person who could make you laugh even on your worst days,” one classmate shared. “He made everyone feel like they mattered.”

Citrus High School released a statement expressing their condolences and support for the grieving student body.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of one of our own. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jaedrien’s family, his friends, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. We are committed to supporting our students and staff during this difficult time,” the school stated.

Counselors have been made available on campus to help students process their grief and find comfort in one another.

Community Grieves and Rallies for Support

Inverness has come together in a powerful show of love and unity in Jaedrien’s memory. Vigils and tributes are being organized throughout the community, with classmates, teachers, and neighbors offering words of remembrance and sharing cherished memories.

A fundraising effort has also been launched to help Jaedrien’s family cover cremation costs and create a memorial that reflects the vibrant spirit he carried throughout his life. Supporters say no parent should have to endure such heartbreak or bear the burden of unexpected funeral expenses alone.

Though legal proceedings against Richards are still unfolding, one thing remains clear: Jaedrien Story’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His life, though cut short far too soon, left an indelible mark.

He will never be forgotten.
