Alexander Benitez-Hernandez Asheboro, N.C. Shooting; Father Killed in Front of His Children Outside Marshall’s

The Asheboro community is reeling after a deadly confrontation on the evening of August 30, 2025, left 23-year-old Alexander Benitez-Hernandez fatally shot in front of his two young children. The incident, which unfolded in a Marshall’s parking lot, has devastated his family and sparked outrage over what loved ones believe was a racially motivated attack.

From Argument to Gunfire

Police reports indicate the violence began around 7:06 p.m. when Benitez-Hernandez and 29-year-old Branson Jacob Russell became involved in an argument inside a nearby business. The dispute escalated outside, where both men—each armed—drew their handguns.

According to investigators, Benitez-Hernandez fired first, striking Russell in the leg, and then tried to retreat toward his car. But the conflict didn’t end there. Despite being wounded, Russell reached a red Ford F-250 parked close by, retrieved a .30-30 rifle, and fired at Benitez-Hernandez, hitting him in the back. The young father collapsed on the pavement as his children watched in horror.

Witness Accounts and Allegations

Alexander’s sister, Jhoana Benitez, told reporters the confrontation was fueled by racial hostility. She said Russell hurled slurs during the argument, shouting phrases such as “Go back to your country” and “You don’t belong here.” While police have not yet confirmed those claims, the family insists that bigotry was at the heart of the tragedy.

Arrest and Charges

After the shooting, Russell fled despite his injury. Authorities quickly circulated a description of his truck, and officers stopped him on East Salisbury Street, taking him into custody. He was taken to a hospital for treatment before being booked into jail.

On September 8, a Randolph County grand jury indicted Russell on second-degree murder, and he was arrested the following day without bond. Investigators note that the case remains open and additional charges could follow.

A Family Torn Apart

The most devastating element of the crime is that Alexander’s children witnessed their father’s final moments. What should have been a safe family outing turned into a traumatic loss they will carry for life. Now their mother must raise them alone, while the family grapples with the sudden absence of a son, brother, and devoted father.

Loved ones remember Alexander as a hardworking young man whose life revolved around his kids. He enjoyed making them laugh, planning for their future, and being present in their everyday lives. That future was stolen in an instant.

Community Response

The shooting has shaken Asheboro residents, faith groups, and leaders. Vigils and gatherings have been organized to honor Alexander’s life, while many have voiced frustration and heartbreak over the allegations of hate behind the crime. Local officials have urged patience as the justice process unfolds but recognize the deep pain of a family and community mourning such a senseless act.

Seeking Justice and Healing

For Alexander’s family, the path ahead is filled with grief but also determination. They hope for justice in court while working to protect his children from further trauma.

They ask the community for prayers and support, choosing to honor his memory by recalling his smile, humor, and unwavering love for his children.

Alexander Benitez-Hernandez’s death underscores the devastating toll of violence and prejudice. For his loved ones, every day will now be marked by his absence. For the community, it is a call to stand together against hate and to work toward a safer, more compassionate futu
