Brackenfell Tragedy: Fairmont High Mourns Loss of Perth Eksteen and Daniel Jansen van Rensburg in Fatal Car Crash

The Brackenfell community is grieving following a devastating car accident on Saturday evening that claimed the lives of four young people, including two Fairmont High School students, in a fiery crash on Cecil Morgan Road.

According to emergency responders, the vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire. Tragically, all four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others survived the crash but sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Among the victims were Perth Keaden Eksteen, a vibrant Grade 12 learner, and Daniel Jansen van Rensburg, a former Fairmont High School student, both remembered as bright and passionate individuals whose lives ended far too soon.

Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), confirmed the identities and expressed heartfelt condolences:

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the learners who tragically lost their lives in the accident. This is a heartbreaking time for the entire school community.”

Fairmont High School paid tribute to the fallen students in a moving statement posted on social media:

“We are devastated by the loss of Perth Eksteen, a bold, spirited, and unforgettable member of our Grade 12 class. Perth brought energy and humor wherever he went, and his presence lit up the school halls. He will be dearly missed by his teachers and classmates.”

The school also honored Daniel Jansen van Rensburg, who, though no longer enrolled at Fairmont, remained a beloved part of its community through his continued representation on the rugby field:

“Daniel was a quiet yet determined young man, known for his passion for rugby and his loyalty to his teammates. His contributions to our school and spirit will never be forgotten.”

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, stated that crews responded around 6:10 p.m. to find the vehicle engulfed in flames.

“According to reports, there were two people trapped inside when fire services arrived. Despite rapid response, four individuals were declared deceased. The remaining two were transported to hospital by ambulance.”

To support students and staff coping with the emotional toll, counseling services have been activated at Fairmont High School and across the district.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that Brackenfell SAPS has launched a culpable homicide investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

“The incident is under active investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage, and the injured parties are receiving ongoing medical care.”

The tragic accident has sent shockwaves through the school and local community. Friends, classmates, and families are now gathering in grief, sharing memories and tributes to honor the lives of Perth and Daniel—two young men whose futures held so much promise.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved and remembering those lost in this tragic incident.
