PLEASANTVILLE, IA — The Pleasantville community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Donald McCormick, a cherished junior at Pleasantville High School, who tragically lost his life in a car accident. The devastating incident also left fellow student Bella critically injured, sending shockwaves through the town and igniting an outpouring of sorrow, support, and reflection from classmates, educators, and community members.
Donald was more than a student—he was a bright light in the hallways of Pleasantville High, known for his enthusiasm, warmth, and larger-than-life personality. Actively involved in school events, Donald was especially admired for his standout performances in the co-ed dance routines, where his energy and charisma were unforgettable. His presence lifted spirits, and his absence will be deeply felt across the community.
A Message of Mourning from the School District
In a heartfelt statement released Sunday, Superintendent Tony Aylsworth of the Pleasantville Community School District confirmed the tragic news:
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our students, Donald McCormick. Donald was a valued member of our school community, and his loss is and will be felt deeply by all of us,” Aylsworth wrote. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the McCormick family, Donald’s friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
To help students and staff process the loss, grief counselors and mental health professionals will be made available at the Pleasantville High School Events Center beginning Monday. The district is encouraging students and staff to seek the emotional support they may need during this difficult time.
Honoring Donald’s Life: A Community Vigil
In partnership with the McCormick family, the Pleasantville Youth Initiative has planned a community vigil to celebrate Donald’s life and legacy. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, at the PHS Events Center and flagpole area:
-

-
7:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Candlelight vigil by the PHS flagpole with shared stories, tributes, and a closing song. Battery-operated candles will be provided for attendees.
This gathering aims to provide a space for healing, remembrance, and community connection as friends, family, and neighbors come together to honor a life that meant so much to so many.
From the Dance Floor to the Heart of Pleasantville
The Pleasantville Dance Team, where Donald performed in the co-ed routine over the past two years, shared a moving tribute on social media:
“Donald’s smile, energy, and joy made him unforgettable. For two years, he danced with us, and each moment was filled with laughter and love. We are devastated by this loss and extend our love and prayers to the McCormick family. Donald’s legacy will live on in the memories and hearts of all who knew him.”
The team also extended their thoughts and continued support to Bella, who is still receiving treatment for her injuries.
Remembering a Young Life Cut Short
Donald McCormick’s influence in Pleasantville went far beyond academics or extracurriculars. He was a trusted friend, a loving son, a source of joy in every setting he entered. He was known for offering encouragement to others and for his ability to make people smile—no matter the circumstances.
As the community comes to terms with this sudden and profound loss, the message is clear: Donald made a difference. His impact will not be forgotten, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
“Our hearts are heavy,” Superintendent Aylsworth said. “Please keep Donald’s family and all those grieving in your thoughts. His life, though short, was filled with love, light, and meaning.”
