HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. — A quiet Tuesday evening in the Trotter’s Ridge neighborhood was shattered by gunfire, leaving two people dead and another injured in what investigators say was a domestic-related shooting. Authorities have taken a juvenile suspect into custody.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. on Kentucky Derby Lane, in a residential area between Lillington and Spout Springs, about eight miles northwest of Anderson Creek. Responding deputies from the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office found three victims inside the home. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third person was transported for medical treatment. As of Wednesday morning, no updates had been provided on the surviving victim’s condition.
Family members have identified the deceased as Bishop Danny Richards and his wife, Sabrina Richards. The shooting took place on what should have been a celebratory occasion—Sabrina’s birthday. Hours earlier, relatives and friends had gathered with the couple to mark the milestone.
The Richards, married for nearly 30 years, were well-known in the community and frequently visited Cumberland County. Friends recall the couple’s fondness for downtown Fayetteville restaurants and their warm, welcoming presence. Sabrina was a graduate of Douglas Byrd High School.
Investigators have confirmed that the suspected shooter is a juvenile relative of the victims. Authorities say the teen fled the residence in a gray truck shortly after the shooting, prompting a county-wide manhunt. Law enforcement located and apprehended the suspect later that night without incident.
The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office has not released the name of the suspect due to their age. Charges are pending as detectives with the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies continue to process the crime scene and interview witnesses.
Sheriff Wayne Coats expressed condolences to the victims’ family and emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation. “This is a tragic situation for everyone involved,” he said. “Our priority is to ensure justice for the victims and support for their loved ones during this devastating time.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.
