TOPEKA, Kan. — Authorities have identified the man killed in the city’s most recent homicide as 42-year-old Drew Davis, a resident of Topeka. Police confirmed on Thursday, August 8, that Davis was fatally shot late Tuesday night, August 6, in the 100 block of N.W. Kendall Avenue.
According to Topeka Police Department Lt. Ronnie Connell, officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 11:15 p.m. following reports of gunfire. The location, situated just north of SW 1st Street and about 10 blocks west of SW Topeka Boulevard, was quickly secured by responding units.
Upon arrival, officers located Davis with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical assessment, he was pronounced dead at the scene. By the following morning, August 7, yellow police crime scene tape cordoned off the rear of a residence at 124 N.W. Kendall Avenue, marking the focal point of the investigation.
Lt. Connell confirmed that no arrests had been made as of Thursday, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Authorities have not released information regarding a potential suspect or motive, urging anyone with relevant details to come forward.
Davis’s death marks Topeka’s 14th homicide of 2025. The city had recorded 11 homicides by this same date last year, ultimately ending 2024 with a total of 22 cases. Law enforcement officials have expressed concern over the year-to-date increase in violent crime.
Community members in the area have voiced growing unease, noting the steady rise in gun-related incidents across Topeka. Police are working to reassure residents, emphasizing that public safety remains a top priority.
Investigators are appealing to witnesses or anyone with surveillance footage from the area to contact the Topeka Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Shawnee County Crime Stoppers.
As the investigation remains active, officials are expected to provide updates as more information becomes available. The killing of Drew Davis adds to a troubling trend that city leaders and law enforcement agencies are striving to address through increased patrols, community outreach, and targeted crime prevention strategies.
