What began as a joyful family getaway ended in heartbreak on Monday, when 54-year-old Gregory “Greg” Corniea of Edina, Minnesota, died in a tragic swimming accident at Tettegouche State Park.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched to the park just after 11:30 a.m. following a 911 call reporting that a man had not resurfaced after jumping from the rocks into the Baptism River at the base of High Falls. The area, while popular for cliff-jumping and swimming, is known for its unpredictable currents, hidden rocks, and sudden depth changes.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), whose field agents deployed an underwater remotely operated vehicle to assist in the search. After a coordinated effort, Greg’s body was recovered around 1:45 p.m.
Authorities believe that Greg struck his head on submerged rocks immediately after entering the water, which may have rendered him unconscious and unable to resurface. This tragic accident occurred during a family trip that had been filled with laughter, adventure, and shared memories.
Family members told KARE 11 News that Greg had jumped from the falls before without incident, as had many others. However, they acknowledged that this time, a combination of natural hazards turned the moment into a devastating loss.
The High Falls of the Baptism River, standing at 63 feet, is the tallest waterfall entirely within Minnesota. Its striking beauty draws countless visitors each year, but officials warn that the area’s strong currents and underwater hazards make it inherently dangerous for swimmers and jumpers.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and DNR are reminding all park visitors to take extreme caution around waterfalls and fast-moving rivers, stressing the importance of assessing risks before participating in recreational activities.
Greg Corniea will be remembered as a devoted family man, a kind-hearted friend, and someone who embraced life’s adventures. His passing is a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the need for vigilance, even in places of great beauty.
Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in the coming days as his loved ones gather to honor his life and legacy.
