The Worcester State University community is heartbroken to announce the passing of Evan Armit, a beloved member of the Men’s Ice Hockey program, who died on August 24, 2025, at the age of 23 after a valiant battle with metastatic melanoma.
Evan’s loss has left a profound void not only within Worcester State Athletics, but also across the broader hockey world, his hometown community, and among the many friends and loved ones who cherished his presence.
A Beloved Teammate and Student
Evan joined the Lancers Men’s Ice Hockey team two years ago and quickly made an impact both on and off the ice. Known for his tireless work ethic, team-first mentality, and positive spirit, he became a cornerstone of the program. While pursuing his degree in Business Administration, he balanced the demands of academics with the dedication and discipline required of collegiate athletics.
Athletic Director Michael Mudd reflected on Evan’s impact, saying, “Evan was an incredible student-athlete and beloved teammate. He will be greatly missed by our entire campus community. Our thoughts are with the Armit family at this difficult time.”
A Passion for Hockey
Evan’s love for the game began in his youth and followed him through competitive levels of play. Before joining Worcester State, he skated with the Winnipeg Freeze (MJHL) and the Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL), where his determination and heart made him a respected competitor. Coaches and teammates alike described him as a player who never took a shift off, always giving everything he had to the game.
Head Coach Jay Punsky shared, “Evan embodied the very best qualities of a teammate and a friend—hardworking, humble, and selfless. He carried himself with quiet strength and treated everyone with kindness, never losing sight of the importance of family and friendship. His joy was infectious, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.”
Beyond the Rink
While hockey was a central part of his life, Evan was so much more than an athlete. He was admired for his kindness, humility, and generosity of spirit. Friends recall his sense of humor, his ability to lift others’ spirits, and the way he made everyone around him feel valued. He was the type of person who celebrated the successes of others as much as his own, choosing service and encouragement over recognition.
Evan’s strength became even more evident during his fight with melanoma. Though faced with a devastating diagnosis, he displayed remarkable courage and grace. By openly sharing his journey, he helped raise awareness about melanoma, inspiring others to prioritize their health and live life with greater appreciation. His story became a beacon of perseverance and hope, reminding many to face challenges with resilience and optimism.
A Legacy of Heart and Inspiration
Evan’s passing is deeply felt by his family, teammates, classmates, and the entire Worcester State community. His memory lives on in the bonds he forged, the lives he touched, and the lessons he imparted through his example of strength, humility, and compassion.
Though his life was tragically short, the impact of his character and spirit will endure for years to come. The Worcester State hockey family, together with the broader hockey community, continues to rally around the Armit family, honoring Evan’s life by carrying forward his legacy of perseverance, kindness, and love for the game.
Evan Armit will be remembered not only as a talented athlete but also as a young man whose courage and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
