Hampshire Community Mourns 17-Year-Old Deegan Kirschke Following Fatal Shooting


HAMPSHIRE, Ill. — The quiet community of Hampshire is reeling after the tragic death of 17-year-old Deegan Kirschke, a Hampshire High School student who was fatally shot inside a home late Saturday night, August 16, 2025.

According to Hampshire Police, officers responded to a call about a shooting around 11:30 p.m. in the 100-block of High Street, where they discovered a teenage boy suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency efforts, Deegan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Victim Identified as Hampshire High School Student

On Monday, Community Unit School District 300 confirmed the victim’s identity as Deegan Kirschke, describing him as a beloved student whose loss will deeply affect classmates, teachers, and the broader community.

In a heartfelt statement, Superintendent Martina Smith extended condolences:

“On behalf of the entire District 300 community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Deegan’s family and friends during this very difficult time. Hampshire High School is committed to supporting students and staff as they navigate this loss, and counseling services are available to provide care and support to those in need.”

Counselors and grief support teams have been made available at Hampshire High School to help students process the tragedy.

Suspect Arrested

Police have since arrested 20-year-old Keyshaun D. Davis of Hampshire, who was at the home at the time of the shooting. Davis is facing multiple felony charges, including:

  • Involuntary manslaughter

  • Endangering the life or health of a child

  • Reckless discharge of a firearm

  • Possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card

  • Possession of ammunition without a FOID card

Davis is currently being held at the Kane County Jail pending his initial court hearing.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances leading to the shooting, but investigators noted that the case appears to involve reckless firearm handling rather than a targeted act of violence.
