HAMPSHIRE, Ill. — The Hampshire area community is deeply shaken by the unexpected and tragic death of 17-year-old Deegan Kirschke, a beloved student and athlete who was fatally shot at a home on High Street late Saturday night, August 16, 2025. Investigators continue to piece together the events that led to his death, though preliminary findings reveal a shocking accident that cut short a young life filled with potential.
Fatal Incident Under Investigation
Hampshire Police were dispatched to a residence in the 100-block of High Street around 11:30 p.m., responding to reports of a shooting. Inside, they discovered Deegan Kirschke, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the firearm discharge are now central to the ongoing investigation.
Accidental Shooting While Handling Firearm
Court documents revealed that Deegan was inside the home with the suspect, 20-year-old Keyshaun D. Davis, and two other individuals when they were handling a 9 mm handgun belonging to Davis’s mother. The group was reportedly practicing disassembling and reassembling the weapon while being videotaped. Davis stepped away momentarily, and upon returning, the weapon discharged, striking Deegan in the abdomen.
