The search for 63-year-old John Daniel Hession, who had been reported missing in Dorset, ended in heartbreak after his body was found in the sea near The Needles, a well-known coastal landmark off the Isle of Wight.
Mr. Hession was discovered unresponsive in the water approximately one nautical mile west of The Needles on July 23. Emergency services recovered his body shortly thereafter. Authorities confirmed that he had been reported missing in Dorset prior to the discovery, prompting concern among loved ones and local agencies.
Born in London on February 25, 1962, John Hession had most recently been residing on Northbrook Road in the capital and was working as a carer at the time of his death. Known by those close to him as a quiet, compassionate individual, he dedicated his time to helping others—a trait that made news of his passing even more difficult to accept.
On August 5, an inquest was formally opened at Bournemouth Town Hall by Brendan Allen, the area coroner for Dorset. During the opening proceedings, Coroner’s Officer Nicola Muller confirmed Mr. Hession’s identity, residence, and employment background.
A postmortem examination, conducted by Dr. Blahut on August 4 at Holly Tree Lodge, concluded that the preliminary cause of death was drowning. Police have stated there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and no evidence of third-party involvement has been found.
However, in line with standard procedure for unexpected deaths, the coroner has adjourned the full inquest until January 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., pending the completion of further inquiries. Coroner Allen has requested detailed statements from Mr. Hession’s family, his general practitioner, any relevant mental health services, and Dorset Police to build a clearer understanding of the events that may have led to his death.
The tragic circumstances have prompted a wave of sympathy and concern, with many expressing hopes that the extended investigation will provide much-needed clarity and closure to his loved ones.
