Man Found Dead with Head Trauma Inside Breaking Ground Building in Dumbo

Brooklyn, NY – Authorities are investigating after a man was discovered dead inside a Breaking Ground affordable housing complex in Dumbo early Monday morning, raising concerns among residents and the wider community.

According to the NYPD, officers responded to a 911 call shortly before 6 a.m. on August 25, 2025, at 90 Sands Street, a building operated by the nonprofit housing organization Breaking Ground. Upon arrival, police found a man lying unconscious and unresponsive inside the facility. Despite efforts from emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed that the victim suffered trauma to the head, though the exact circumstances leading to his death remain unclear. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death, whether accidental, self-inflicted, or criminal in nature.

As of now, the victim’s identity has not been released, pending proper notification of family members.

Breaking Ground, which has been providing supportive and affordable housing in New York City for decades, issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident:

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at 90 Sands and extend our heartfelt condolences to the individual’s loved ones. The safety and wellbeing of our tenants and staff remain our highest priority, and we continue to work closely with authorities as they investigate.”

The 90 Sands Street building, a 30-story former Jehovah’s Witnesses hotel converted into affordable housing by Breaking Ground, is home to hundreds of low- and moderate-income tenants, including formerly homeless individuals. The building also offers on-site supportive services designed to help residents stabilize and rebuild their lives.

The discovery of the body has left many residents shaken, particularly because the details surrounding the man’s death remain uncertain. Some tenants expressed worry about safety in the building, while others noted that Breaking Ground has historically provided a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable populations.

Police are continuing their investigation and have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected. No arrests have been made at this time.
