The community of Melbourne’s west has been left devastated after two children were found dead in separate homes in Cobblebank on Saturday night, in what police believe to be a connected and deeply shocking act of violence.
Tragedy Unfolds in Cobblebank
Emergency services were called to the quiet suburb, about 33km from Melbourne’s CBD, shortly after 8pm. At a home on Marble Drive, officers discovered a young girl with fatal stab wounds. Less than 200 meters away, on Cobble Street, a teenage boy was also found dead from what police sources have described as “horrific” injuries.
Both crime scenes were quickly secured, with homicide detectives leading the investigation. Authorities believe the two incidents are linked, though the exact circumstances are still being pieced together.
Streets Shaken by Violence
The normally peaceful neighborhood was transformed into a major crime scene. Police tape cordoned off parts of the area, crime scene units lined the streets, and a State Emergency Service (SES) tent was set up outside one of the homes.
Witnesses described a heart-wrenching scene, with one woman collapsing in grief near the Marble Drive property as relatives tried to console her. Residents gathered in small groups, many of them parents and teenagers, trying to comprehend the enormity of what had occurred so close to their homes.
“It’s always really quiet here,” said one long-time local who has lived on Marble Street for seven years. “You don’t expect something like this to happen so close to home. Everyone is in shock.”
Police Probe Continues
Detectives were seen speaking with neighbors and local youths on Saturday night, attempting to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Authorities are also examining whether a black SUV reportedly spotted in the area around the time of the attacks may be connected.
Victoria Police released a statement confirming that homicide detectives are leading the case.
“At this stage, the exact circumstances remain unclear,” a spokesperson said. “Emergency services remain at the scene as the investigation continues.”
The identities of the young victims have not yet been formally released, as police work closely with devastated family members and the wider community grapples with the tragedy.
