Officer David Rose Obituary, Cause Of Death: DeKalb County Officer David Rose Killed in Line of Duty During Emory University Shooting

The DeKalb County Police Department has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Officer David Rose, who was tragically killed in the line of duty during a harrowing active shooter incident near Emory University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus on Friday afternoon.

Officer Rose, known for his bravery, commitment, and selflessness, was among the first responders to the scene. The department described him as a dedicated protector of the community who faced danger head-on to safeguard others. “Our deepest condolences go out to Officer Rose’s family, friends, fellow officers, and the entire law enforcement community during this incredibly difficult time,” said the department in an official statement.

The shooting unfolded around 5 p.m. near the Emory Point CVS on Clifton Road, prompting Emory University to issue an emergency alert urging students, staff, and nearby residents to follow the “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” protocol and avoid the area. For over an hour, a lockdown was enforced while law enforcement worked to neutralize the threat and secure the campus.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Fortunately, no civilians were seriously injured in the incident. However, the attack involved gunfire directed at multiple CDC buildings, according to CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez, who expressed profound heartbreak over the event. “Our top priority remains the safety and well-being of everyone at the CDC,” Monarez stated, emphasizing close coordination with federal, state, and local agencies in the ongoing investigation.

Currently, parts of the CDC campus remain under partial lockdown as officials continue to gather evidence and assess the scene.

Officer Rose’s death comes as the DeKalb County law enforcement community was preparing to welcome Officer Greeson, a seasoned 12-year veteran of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, who has served in multiple roles including school resource officer and investigator. Greeson resides with his wife, Natalie, and their three children.

When you head off to bed please remember a 33 year old Dekalb County Police officer, David Rose who was killed at the CVS at Emory Point. He was shot earlier today and now he’s gone from this earth, leaving behind his pregnant wife and two small children.

This tragic loss has deeply shaken the community and underscored the risks law enforcement officers face daily. Vigils and tributes have been held honoring Officer Rose’s courage and sacrifice, reminding all of the ultimate price paid in service to protect and serve.
