One Dead, Six Rescued After Rip Current Incident at Seaside Heights Beach

Seaside Heights, NJ — A tragic ocean incident Monday evening claimed the life of one swimmer while six others were rescued from dangerous waters off Webster Avenue Beach, officials confirmed.

The Seaside Heights Fire Department responded just before 7 p.m. to reports of multiple swimmers in distress. Emergency crews arrived swiftly and managed to pull seven individuals from the ocean, which was experiencing hazardous conditions due to rip currents. Despite rescue efforts, one swimmer was later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center in Toms River. The six others are currently recovering from the ordeal.

Authorities noted that the beach where the incident occurred was unguarded at the time, with lifeguards off duty and red flag warnings in place, signaling hazardous surf conditions. Over the preceding weekend, the area saw 12 water rescues related to rip currents, underscoring the ongoing risks swimmers face on unprotected beaches in the region.

The National Weather Service had issued warnings of moderate rip currents and waves between two and three feet on Monday, conditions that can quickly become perilous for even experienced swimmers.

Officials emphasized the importance of paying close attention to beach safety warnings and lifeguard schedules to prevent similar tragedies. “This heartbreaking event is a reminder of how quickly conditions can change and the importance of heeding safety advisories,” a spokesperson said.

Drone footage captured during the rescue shows the urgency and scale of the operation, with rescuers repeatedly entering the water and using jet skis to reach those caught in the strong currents.

The identity of the deceased swimmer has not yet been released pending family notification. Local authorities continue to investigate the incident and are urging beachgoers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially on unguarded beaches.

For those planning to visit New Jersey’s shores, officials recommend checking local lifeguard hours and surf conditions regularly and to swim only in designated, guarded areas to ensure safety.
