Pico Rivera Mourns 13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Gas Station Shooting Days After Beloved Coach’s Death

PICO RIVERA, Calif. – A community already reeling from the violent killing of a well-loved baseball coach is now facing even deeper heartbreak following the death of a 13-year-old boy in a second gas station shooting.

The victim has been identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office as Saith Toledo Mendez, a teenager whose short life was cut tragically short on August 23, 2025.

The Shooting

Authorities say the gunfire erupted shortly before midnight at the 76 gas station near Rosemead and Whittier boulevards. Investigators believe Saith was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when an unidentified gunman opened fire for reasons that remain unclear.

Like the earlier shooting that claimed the life of 36-year-old Marc Sweet, the suspect fled the area on foot. Sheriff’s officials say there is no evidence linking the two shootings, though both happened within just two miles and two days of each other.

A Mother’s Pain

Friends of Saith’s mother told reporters she often brought her son to the gas station during her late shifts. The family had been struggling with homelessness and living in a shelter, and she did not want to leave her son there alone at night.

“She was doing her best to keep him safe, even when circumstances were stacked against her,” said a family friend. “She just wanted him close by. And now she’s lost the most important person in her life.”

Community members have expressed outrage and sorrow, noting that Saith’s death highlights the vulnerability of families dealing with housing insecurity.

Remembering Saith

While only 13, Saith was described by those who knew him as a kind and gentle soul, a boy who loved soccer, video games, and making people laugh. Friends said he was shy at first but quickly opened up to become the life of the group.

“He had this way of lifting you up,” a classmate shared. “Even when we didn’t have much, he could make you forget all your problems.”

Neighbors recalled seeing him kick a ball around the parking lot with other kids from the shelter, always smiling despite the struggles his family faced.

Two Lives Lost, One Community Shaken

The death of Saith, coming just two days after the shooting of beloved baseball coach Marc Sweet, has left Pico Rivera residents shaken and fearful. Many say the randomness of the violence is what hurts the most.

“These were people just living their lives,” one resident said. “Marc was filling up his car. Saith was with his mom while she worked. And now both are gone.”

Authorities are intensifying patrols and urging the public to remain vigilant. Both shooters remain at large, leaving unanswered questions and heightened concerns in the community.

Seeking Justice

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is calling on anyone with information about Saith’s killing to come forward. Detectives say even the smallest lead could help bring justice to his grieving family.

Tips can be reported to the LASD Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

Carrying His Memory

As word of Saith’s death spreads, candles and flowers have been left outside the gas station where his life was taken. Notes of love and support for his mother have also been shared on social media, where many community members are rallying to provide financial and emotional support.

Though his life was short, those who knew Saith say his kindness and smile will never be forgotten.

“He deserved a chance to grow up, to chase his
