SOUTH TANNA, Vanuatu — A joyous family outing turned devastating yesterday morning when a loaded red Isuzu D-Max double-cabin pickup truck capsized and plunged over four meters off the road, killing a young boy and critically injuring several others, including a pregnant woman.
The vehicle, reportedly driven by the young boy himself, was carrying his family as they embarked on a celebratory journey around Tanna Island following weeks of festivities. Eyewitnesses described how the truck swerved at high speed near a notorious stretch of road—one already linked to fatal accidents—and then flipped down the embankment.
One witness recounted the horror: “The truck was veering side to side before it capsized, tossing passengers one by one onto the roadside.” Nearby pickup drivers rushed to assist, transporting the injured to Lenakel Hospital for urgent care.
Among the critically injured was Eddie Freeman, who tragically succumbed to his injuries around 2 p.m. at Lenakel Hospital. His death sent shockwaves through the communities of Lownapkamim, Isini, and neighboring villages. Families are now gathered near the hospital grounds, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones and offering mutual support during this trying time.
A pregnant woman and other seriously wounded passengers were later medevaced to Vila Central Hospital (VCH) for advanced treatment. The severity of their injuries underscores the urgent need for timely access to comprehensive healthcare services for remote communities like Tanna.
The location of the accident is well-known among residents for its danger. This latest tragedy has amplified calls for improved road signage, speed restrictions, and better infrastructure. Community leaders are urging local authorities and the TAFEA Police Patrol to institute stronger safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
The incident starkly illustrates the vulnerability of remote areas to road accidents and the critical gaps in emergency response systems. One moment, the family was celebrating; the next, they are grappling with heartbreak. As the island mourns this loss, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for greater road safety and emergency preparedness.
