A devastating accident occurred early on August 8, 2025, on the Mohakhali Flyover in Dhaka, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving a third seriously injured.
At approximately 2:20 a.m., a Toyota Corolla Hybrid (Dhaka Metro Kh-12-4042) traveling at high speed veered off course and collided with a road divider near the Setu Bhaban area, just before entering the flyover. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire. Local bystanders acted swiftly, rescuing the three occupants from the burning car. Two men, identified as Rintu (40) and Shawkat Hossain Kanan (41), succumbed to their injuries shortly after being transported to nearby hospitals. Rintu was pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), while Kanan died at Kurmitola General Hospital. The third individual, known only as Hasnat, was also injured and is currently receiving treatment; his exact condition remains unconfirmed.
The fire was extinguished by firefighting units from Tejgaon Fire Station, who arrived at the scene at 2:34 a.m. and completed their operation by 3:05 a.m. Authorities are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to determine the cause of the crash and to identify the third victim.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about road safety and the dangers of speeding on Dhaka’s flyovers. The Mohakhali Flyover, inaugurated in 2004, is one of the city’s primary overpasses, facilitating traffic flow between central Dhaka and the northern regions.
Authorities urge drivers to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially during late-night hours, to prevent such devastating accidents.
