Tragic Drowning at Gunnison Bend Reservoir: 11-Year-Old Trey Rawlinson Remembered After Fatal Accident

The tight-knit community of Oak City is mourning the devastating loss of Trey Rawlinson, an 11-year-old boy who tragically drowned following a watercraft accident at Gunnison Bend Reservoir on the evening of Tuesday, August 5.

Trey was the beloved son of Tiffany and Jared Rawlinson, a treasured younger brother to Jax and Jett, and a caring big brother to Ava. A vibrant and joyful 5th grader, Trey was known for his adventurous spirit, big heart, and kind soul that touched everyone he met.

According to the Millard County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. during a church youth event near Delta, Utah. While participating in a recreational activity, a rope connected to a watercraft became entangled in the boat’s motor, tragically pulling Trey underwater.

Bystanders and first responders sprang into action, immediately administering life-saving measures. Trey was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but despite all efforts, he sadly passed away from his injuries.

While authorities have not yet officially released the victim’s name, family members and loved ones have publicly identified Trey and are remembering the joy and love he brought into their lives.

“This is a heartbreaking and unimaginable loss,” said a family friend. “Trey was a shining light—curious, full of energy, and always wearing a smile. His absence leaves a deep void in all of our hearts.”

The Millard County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the details surrounding the tragic accident. In a statement, officials extended their condolences to the Rawlinson family and all those impacted by this profound loss.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, grief counselors and church leaders have been made available to support the children and families affected—especially those who were present during the incident.

As the Oak City community comes together to grieve, remember, and honor Trey’s life, friends and neighbors are encouraged to lift the Rawlinson family in their thoughts and prayers during this deeply painful time.

This remains an ongoing investigation. Additional information is expected to be released by the Millard County Sheriff’s Office in the coming days.
