FORT WORTH, Texas — A violent confrontation on the city’s east side ended in tragedy early Sunday morning, as a woman identified by loved ones as Monique was fatally shot, and another woman sustained serious injuries during what authorities believe was a planned altercation.
The incident unfolded just before dawn along the 1800 block of E. Robert Street, near an apartment complex where tensions had apparently been building between two groups of women. According to preliminary reports from the Fort Worth Police Department, Monique and another woman arrived at the location with the intention of confronting a group of females with whom they reportedly had an ongoing dispute.
Before the two could even exit their vehicle, gunfire erupted.
Police say multiple unknown suspects opened fire on their car, striking both occupants. The vehicle was riddled with bullets in a matter of seconds, creating chaos in the quiet residential area. Monique was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel who arrived shortly after the shooting. The second woman, who was driving the vehicle, was rushed to a local hospital where she remains under medical care. Her condition has not yet been made public, but authorities have confirmed she survived the initial injuries.
Investigators say the shooters and others present fled the area immediately following the gunfire, leaving behind a scene of confusion and heartbreak. By the time law enforcement arrived, the suspects had vanished, and no witnesses have yet come forward with detailed descriptions.
Police believe the confrontation was premeditated and tied to personal disputes, but the exact motive behind the shooting is still unclear. Investigators are actively pursuing leads, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing potential witnesses to piece together the moments leading up to the deadly exchange.
Monique’s identity has not yet been formally released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, but family members at the scene and on social media confirmed her name and mourned her loss. Described as a vibrant and outspoken young woman, Monique is being remembered by friends and relatives as someone who “stood her ground” but didn’t deserve to be gunned down in the street.
Community leaders and anti-violence advocates have echoed those sentiments, urging anyone with information to come forward and help bring justice to Monique’s family.
“There is no reason a disagreement should escalate into gunfire,” said Rev. Thomas Avery, a Fort Worth activist who works with youth and conflict resolution programs. “These are preventable tragedies, and we all have a role in speaking out and speaking up when tensions rise.”
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the Fort Worth Police Homicide Unit continues its investigation. They are asking anyone who was in the area between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. on Sunday or who may have video footage to contact detectives or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
Monique’s family is expected to announce memorial plans in the coming days, and the community continues to grieve the loss of another young life to senseless gun violence.
